Classes start January 18, 2012

A fun and educational class for the public to learn the basics of Braille starts next week in Victoria.

Use your fingers and your eyes to uncover the secrets of the dots. Learn about the two hundred-year-old, six-dot reading system used by blind people. Read and write the Braille letters from ‘A’ to ‘Z’ and come away with a positive message about blindness.

“We are offering this class for the first time to bring public attention to Braille and to show people that Braille is a valid and thriving form of literacy anyone can learn, whether blind or sighted. People take courses in all sorts of things, like pottery, art, music, sign language, so why not Braille,” says Elizabeth Lalonde, course instructor and owner of BlindWay Training and Consulting Services.

“You don’t have to be blind or visually-impaired to learn Braille. We want people to learn for their own personal interest and to raise awareness about this too-often forgotten reading system,” says Gail Copp, another course instructor.
